LISTEN TO AUDIO SERMON RETURN TO MAIN SERMON PAGE The Church: Her Lord’s Family (Brotherhood) Ephesians 2:18-19 INTRODUCTION The Scriptures use a variety of metaphors to enable us to better understand the nature of the Church. We are referred to as, among others, the “people of God,” the “body of Christ,” the “flock of the Lord,” and the “flock of Christ.” These metaphorical references are extremely helpful in our determination of the relation of the church to Christ and his kingdom. However, the most valuable picture of the Church is the Household of God, or Family of God. We easily understand the nature of the Church through the metaphor of the family. Each family has certain characteristics and behaviors that define its relationship. Let us explore God’s family. TWO PRIMARY CHARACTERISTICS OF CHRISTIAN FAMILY 1. The Shared Fatherhood of God Ephesians 2:18: For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.** Ephesians 1:5-6: he predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. Ephesians 4:6: one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 1 John 3:1-2: See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called the sons of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 2. The Shared Common Belief John 1:12-13: But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born not of blood or the will of man or of the will of the flesh, but of God. Luke 8:21: My mother and brother are those who hear the word of God and do it. Matthew
16:13-18: 13Now
when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples, BEHAVIORS OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY (BROTHERS AND SISTERS) 1. Freely Sacrifice for One Another's Maturity (or Lack Thereof) 1 Corinthians 8:10-13: 10For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. 2. Generously and Unconditionally Meet One Another's Needs James 2:14-15: 14What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? Matthew 25:31-46:
31 3. Encourage and Build One Another Up
Romans 14:10-21: 10Why do you pass judgment on
your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we
will all stand before the judgment seat of God;
11for it is written,
"As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God." 12So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. 13Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. 20Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. James 4:11-12: 11Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? 4. Hold Each Other Accountable 1 Thessalonians 5:11: 11Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing Galatians 6:1-2: 1Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Hebrews 10:24: 24And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 2 Thessalonians 3:15: 15Do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: 9Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
