Devotional Material

I write to you from McDonalds, Chester’s version of Starbucks, great coffee and now internet service. How about that? This morning in my daily study time I read about Judah’s great young king Josiah, the great grandson of Hezekiah. The writer of 2 Chronicles begins his sketch of Josiah with the words, “…he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father; and he did not turn aside to the right hand or the left” ( 2 Chronicles 34:2 ESV). Aren’t those great words to describe a king of God’s people, or anyone for that matter? As I read on, I was reminded of Josiah’s reforms: renewal of the Temple worship and life, recommitment to the Law of God, and a renewed celebration of the Passover, like none since the time of the Judges. 2 Kings tells us that God relented on his promised destruction of Judah because of Josiah’s faithfulness. Isn’t that a powerful testimony to a man’s obedience and to God’s almighty grace? The Lord of Creation was moved by the obedience of the king.  Josiah’s testimony is given more vigor in light of the words written about his great grandson, Zedekiah, the last king of Judah. We are told, “He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God. He did no humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke from the mouth of the Lord…He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord, the God of Israel” (2 Chronicles 36:12-13 ESV).

May the Lord of all glory be pleased with us as we live to the example of Josiah. We are called to walk in the ways of the Lord not turning to the right and to the left. Let us go forth and endeavor to do so. How can we do that? The answer is simple, isn’t it? Our lives are to be full of worship in all aspects of life and in the corporate worship of God’s people, committed to the Lord and his Law (be led by the Spirit), and constantly devoted to celebrating our Passover, Christ and his cross. God grant you the courage, mercy, and grace needed to live unto him.

In Christ,

Clint
